Field Experience

Picture
For an education major's studies the field experience can be the most fun and yet the most difficult time in their schooling. And yet it is also the most important. Mainly because it shows you first hand what the classroom is like from the eyes of a teacher instead of the student.

Fall 2010
Queen Creek High School
Grade: 10
Hours: 30.25

For my service learning experience at Queen Creek High School it was a great eye opener for what I need to understand before I start with my profession. My first day the students and my mentor teacher were not that open to me since for most days I was only there for one class period. As the days went on I learned many different teaching methods. One which was called "layer work" were students had to do certain layers of classwork in order to get a certain grade. Half way through my time there he added more to it. To get the students ready for college he had explained that all tests needed at least a 70% or higher to count in the grade book, but they can retake each test once if they got below a 70%. That showed me that he really cared about his students. For the fridays I would arrive i was in about 4 different class periods. That  way i could observe the cultural diversity better than just seeing one class of students. Like most high schools, everyone had their own groups and didnt go outside them to talk to other students. About three forths of the way in my service learing I was teaching lessons and helping out the students. Since they got to see me more they were more open with me about asking questions. When i first arrived to the school they didnt feel like calling me "Mr. Bass" even thats what their teacher told them to call me and only called me by my first name. But as i got to know them more they forgot my first name and only called me mr bass. My last day was my real test. As i came in the classroom to say hello to my mentor teacher i was surprised by a substitue. So as i sat in the classroom as the sub put on a video, he feel asleep half way through. Not just the first class, but for everyclass. After the video i decided to take over for him. I gave the lesson, handed out tests, and helped the students with their work for each class. After that day i knew that i have what it takes to teach highschool.
